What is kept
- Upright photos: the rotation stored in a photo (EXIF orientation, or the rotation and mirroring of a HEIC or AVIF file) is applied, so every result shows the right way up.
- Transparency stays in PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, ICO, TIFF, TGA and QOI. JPEG, BMP and PNM have none, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour you choose.
- Animation: animated GIF, WebP and PNG stay animated when saved as GIF, WebP or PNG, with the frame timing and loop count.
- Colour: the colour profile is kept in JPEG, PNG and WebP. 16-bit pictures (including 10-bit HEIC and AVIF) keep their depth as 16-bit PNG or TIFF.
- Privacy: camera info (EXIF), including GPS location, is removed unless you choose to keep it.
How the special formats are read
- HEIC, HEIF and AVIF are decoded with libheif; camera RAW files are developed with LibRaw using the camera's white balance. Both run as separate programs with time limits.
- JPEG XL is decoded with jxl-oxide. A JPEG XL made from a JPEG gives back the exact original JPEG when you convert it to JPG.
- PSD and PSB use the merged picture Photoshop stores next to the layers (saved when “Maximize Compatibility” is on, the default).
- SVG drawings are rendered at the size you choose (1024 px on the longest side by default), with a transparent background. Only the uploaded file is used: pictures or fonts it links to on the internet or on a disk are never loaded.
- HDR and OpenEXR pictures are tone-mapped so bright areas keep their detail.
For the ICO format, choose a favicon (16, 32 and 48 px) or all sizes up to 256 px; non-square pictures are centred on a transparent square.
