Convert JPEG XL to PNG or JPG
JPEG XL (.jxl) is a modern format with excellent compression, but few programs and browsers can
open it yet. This page converts JXL pictures to PNG, which opens everywhere and loses nothing
more; choose JPG under “Convert to” if you prefer smaller files.
- Upload one or more
.jxlfiles, or a ZIP of a folder. - Keep “PNG”, or choose JPG, WebP or another format.
- Click Convert.
Getting the original JPG back
Many JXL files were made from JPGs with lossless JPEG recompression, which keeps enough data to rebuild the original file bit for bit. When you convert such a file to JPG, the converter rebuilds that exact original JPG instead of encoding a new one, so nothing is lost at all. You get a note when this happens (the quality setting then doesn't apply).
What is kept
- Transparency in PNG, WebP and the other formats that support it.
- High bit depth: JXL pictures with more than 8 bits per colour become 16-bit PNG or TIFF.
- Orientation: pictures are shown upright as JPEG XL defines them.
- The colour profile; camera info is removed unless you keep it under More options.
Good to know
- Animated JXL files give their first frame.
- Wide-gamut pictures (such as Display P3) keep their colour profile in PNG, JPG and WebP, so colour-managed programs show them correctly.
- JPEG XL decoding uses jxl-oxide, an open-source decoder written in Rust, so no extra software is needed on your computer.
