Fix a Snapchat Memories export

When you download your Memories from Snapchat ("Download My Data"), the photos and videos come out without their capture date and without their location: a phone or photo app files them all under the day of the export (or a strange year such as 1970 or 2052), and nothing shows up on the map. The real date, time and place of every memory are in a separate list inside the export, memories_history.json. Captions, stickers and drawings come as separate transparent -overlay.png pictures, and long videos come cut into several short ones.

This tool reads the whole export, matches every photo and video to its entry in the list, and gives you the memories back fixed:

How to use it

On accounts.snapchat.com, open My Data, switch on Export your Memories and Export JSON Files, choose All time and submit.
When Snapchat's e-mail arrives, download every mydata~….zip file (large exports come in several parts: mydata~….zip, mydata~…-1.zip, mydata~…-2.zip…). Download them soon: the links expire after a few days.
Upload all the parts here together, without unzipping them, and click Fix my memories. A large export takes a few minutes, more when many videos have captions.
Check the pictures, dates and places on the result page, try the sample, then download the ZIP of fixed memories and import the folder into Apple Photos, Google Photos or your gallery.

What you get

All fixed memories (ZIP): every photo and video, fixed and named by date, plus a list of memories (CSV and JSON) with each file's local time, time zone, place and original name.

Good to know

Local time. A memory with a location gets the local time of that place, summer time included (a snap taken at 20:30 in Paris in July says 20:30 +02:00). Memories without a location are given in UTC, marked +00:00, unless you pick "the time zone most of my memories were taken in" under the options.
Quality. Photos and videos without a caption are not re-encoded: only the date and place are added. A photo with a caption is saved once as a high-quality JPEG; a video with a caption has to be re-encoded (H.264, high quality) with its sound copied. You can also keep captions as separate PNG files, or get both versions.
Very large exports. Captions are burnt into videos while the job's time allows; any left over keep the caption as a separate file next to the video, and the result page says so. If your memories are more than one job can return, fix them in batches: a few parts at a time, each time with memories_history.json (in the json folder of the first part).
Older exports with only download links. Exports made before Snapchat started including the files have only the list and links that expire within days; those can't be fetched here. Request a new export with Export your Memories switched on.
Not in any export: memories in My Eyes Only (move them out before exporting). Chat photos and videos (chat_media) are left out: this tool fixes Memories.
Damaged parts. A part whose download was interrupted is read up to where it stops; the result page tells you which part to download again.

Your export is only used to fix your memories: uploads are deleted as soon as the job is done, and the results are deleted after 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my exported Snapchat Memories have the wrong date?

The photos and videos in a Snapchat export carry no capture date of their own, so phones and photo apps fall back to the day of the export, or to a blank date that shows up as 1970 or 2052. The real date, time and place of each memory are only in a separate list, memories_history.json. This tool matches every file to its entry in that list and writes the date and place into the file.

Which files do I upload?

All the mydata~….zip files Snapchat gave you, together. Large exports come in several parts (mydata~…zip, mydata~…-1.zip, mydata~…-2.zip…); the first one holds the list of memories and the others only more photos and videos. A single ZIP holding all the parts works too.

My export only has memories_history.json with download links, no photos. What now?

Those links expire after a few days and can't be downloaded here. Request a new export: on accounts.snapchat.com open My Data, switch on “Export your Memories” and “Export JSON Files”, choose All time and submit. The export you get then includes the photos and videos.

Will the photos show the right time and place in Apple Photos and Google Photos?

The date and place go into the fields those apps read. Photos get the EXIF capture date with its UTC offset and the GPS position. Videos get the creation date and location in Apple's own tags (com.apple.quicktime.creationdate and location.ISO6709), which Apple Photos uses for videos, and in the standard movie header and location atom that Google Photos and Android read. The files are also named by date and carry the capture time as their file time.

Is the quality reduced?

Photos and videos without a caption are not re-encoded at all: the date and place are added to the file as it is. A photo with a caption is decoded once, the caption is drawn on at full resolution and it is saved once as a high-quality JPEG. A video with a caption has to be re-encoded (H.264, high quality) to draw the caption on every frame; its sound is copied.

What about My Eyes Only and chat media?

Memories in My Eyes Only are not included in Snapchat exports at all, so they can't be fixed; move them out of My Eyes Only in the app before you export. Photos and videos from chats (chat_media) are left out: this tool fixes Memories.

Are my files kept?

No. The upload is deleted as soon as the job is done, and the fixed memories are deleted automatically after 30 minutes (or straight away with “Delete now”).
