Compare two TIA Portal or STEP 7 projects
A machine was changed during commissioning and nobody wrote down what. The copy in the PLC differs from the one on the server. A supplier sends version 1.1 of a project. To see what changed without opening both projects side by side, upload the older version first and the newer one under "Second version to compare".
What the comparison shows
- Blocks added, removed or changed, and in each changed block the networks: each changed LAD or FBD network drawn before and after, SCL and STL code line by line.
- Interfaces: members added, removed, renamed or with a new data type, start value or comment.
- Data blocks: changed values.
- Tags and constants: new and removed tags, new addresses, data types and values. A tag that kept its address but got a new name shows as renamed.
- Watch tables: added, removed and changed entries.
- Hardware: devices and CPUs added or removed, changed order numbers, firmware and IP addresses.
The report comes as a PDF, an HTML page and an Excel workbook, one row per difference with where it is. The result page lists the number of differences by area and the first of them.
Which files
Any two of: TIA Portal archives (.zap11 to .zap21), zipped TIA Portal or STEP 7 project
folders, STEP 7 archives, STEP 5 .S5D files. The two can be in different formats: compare a
STEP 7 project with its TIA Portal migration, or the same program written in LAD and later in
SCL. Blocks are matched by their number and type, networks by their position and content.
Things to know
- Each project is also read on its own, so you get the full printout of the first one with the comparison.
- Know-how protected blocks are compared by their name, version and interface only, since their code is encrypted.
- Changed titles and comments are listed under their own heading, Documentation, so a documentation update is easy to tell apart from a logic change.
