Open DLIS and LIS well logs without Techlog
Wireline and LWD logs arrive as DLIS (API RP66 version 1) files, older ones as LIS 79, often on a CD or a data-room download with no program to open them. This converter reads the files directly and gives you every curve as LAS 2.0, CSV and Excel, a PDF log print with the usual tracks, pictures of image logs, and all the header information the file carries.
What to upload
| Format | Files | What is read |
|---|---|---|
| DLIS (RP66 v1) | .dlis, .dls | every logical file and frame, depth or time indexed, channels with units and long names, array channels, origin (well, field, company, service, date), parameters, tools, comments and messages |
| LIS 79 | .lis, .lti, .tap, LIS tape images | every logical file and data format specification, channels sampled once or several times per depth step, the CONS and wellsite tables, operator comments |
| LAS | .las 1.2, 2.0 (also wrapped) and 3.0 | the curves and every header section |
| BIT | Western Atlas / Dresser Atlas .bit | every log pass with its date and channels |
Upload several files, or a .zip of a well folder, to convert them together. Files that are not
well logs (pictures, PDFs, readme files) are skipped.
What you get
- LAS 2.0 for every frame or log set, with the depth range and step, the well section (company, well, field, location, service company, date, UWI or API number), all curves with units and descriptions, the parameters, and the remarks of the original file.
- CSV with the units in the header row, comma or semicolon separated.
- Excel workbook with one sheet per frame, a summary, a list of all curves with their range, and the well information, parameters, tools and remarks.
- PDF log print: gamma ray, SP and caliper in the first track, resistivity on a logarithmic scale, density, neutron (reversed), sonic and PEF in the third, further curves in extra tracks and an image track for the first array curve. The depth scale is picked from the length of the log (1:200, 1:500 and so on).
- Pictures of image logs and other array curves (borehole images with 16 or 56 sectors, for example) as PNG files.
- A header file listing every curve, parameter, tool and remark.
Depths and units
Schlumberger DLIS files usually store depth in tenths of an inch, and some processing programs in millimetres. Depths are converted to feet or metres: with "Auto", metric files stay in metres and the others go to feet, or pick one. Channels stored in tenths of an inch (station depths, for example) are converted the same way. All other curves keep the units of the file.
Frames, fast channels and arrays
DLIS frames and LIS log sets each have their own sampling, so each becomes its own LAS file and
Excel sheet. LIS curves recorded several times per depth step (micro-resistivity, for example)
get their own set with a matching depth column. A curve with several values per depth becomes one
column per value (GR_IMG_01, GR_IMG_02 …); you can leave such curves out of LAS and CSV under
"More options". Arrays with more than 512 values per sample, such as sonic waveforms, are only in
the pictures.
What is not converted
Records the logging company encrypted are skipped: they hold proprietary tool data, not the logs. LIS channels in vendor-specific layouts (raw dipmeter blocks, for example) are listed in a note and left out. Text channels are not in the numeric exports. A damaged or cut-off file is read as far as it goes, with a note saying so.
