Move a Premiere Pro project to DaVinci Resolve
DaVinci Resolve can't open a .prproj file. The usual way across is to export a Final Cut Pro 7 XML
from Premiere Pro, which needs Premiere Pro running, a working subscription and a project that
opens. When the subscription has ended, the computer with Premiere is gone, or the project is
damaged, that way is closed.
What this tool does
Upload the .prproj. Every sequence in it is written as a Final Cut Pro 7 XML (the format Resolve's
File > Import > Timeline reads), plus CMX 3600 EDLs per track and an OpenTimelineIO file. What
comes across:
- every video and audio track, in order, with the clips at their exact frames and their source in points;
- constant speed changes and reversed clips, nested sequences, cross dissolves and other transitions with their length and position on the cut;
- position, scale, rotation, crop and opacity from each clip's Motion and Opacity settings;
- the media paths, so Resolve links the clips when the media is where Premiere had it.
Effects, color grades, audio levels and Essential Graphics titles stay behind; the result page lists each effect with the number of clips that use it, so you know what to redo.
Media somewhere else
If the media moved, Resolve shows the clips offline after import: right-click the timeline's clips in the media pool, choose Relink, and point at the folder. The media list in the same download gives every file name and its original path.
A damaged project
The export works on what can be read from a damaged project too, so the sequences that survived reach Resolve even when Premiere Pro refuses the file.
