Move a Camtasia edit to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve
Camtasia is quick for screen recordings, but sooner or later a course, a product video or a client edit has to go on in a full editor, or the Camtasia licence runs out while the projects are still needed. Camtasia exports finished videos, not editable timelines. Upload the project file and get the timeline back for other editors: every clip on its track with its in and out points, speed changes, groups, positions and zooms, volume, transitions, callout texts, captions and markers.
What to upload
| Camtasia | File |
|---|---|
| Camtasia 2018 to 2026 for Windows | the .tscproj project file |
| Camtasia 9 for Windows, Camtasia 3 and 2018 to 2026 for Mac | .tscproj; a Mac .cmproj project is a folder, so compress it and upload the .zip |
| any version, "Export as zip" | the .zip Camtasia made |
| Camtasia Studio 3 to 8 | the .camproj project file |
The recordings and media are not needed: the converted files point to them, and you relink them in the editor (or give the folder they will be in, see below). Several projects can be converted at once.
What you get
- Premiere Pro XML (Final Cut Pro 7 XML): open it in Premiere Pro with File > Import. DaVinci Resolve (File > Import > Timeline) and Avid Media Composer read it too. Groups become nested sequences, recordings keep their picture and sound linked.
- Final Cut Pro XML (
.fcpxml, version 1.10): for Final Cut Pro (File > Import > XML) and DaVinci Resolve. Every Camtasia track becomes a storyline of its own, groups become compound clips, callouts with text become titles, captions stay captions. Checked against Apple's FCPXML document type definition. - EDLs (CMX 3600, one per track) and an OpenTimelineIO file for other editors and tools.
- Captions as SRT and WebVTT, ready for YouTube, an LMS or a player.
- A media list (CSV): every file the timeline uses, where Camtasia had it, where the converted files point, and whether it was in your upload.
- Markers (CSV), the text of every callout, a picture of the timeline and a report of what came across and what did not.
The result page shows the timeline picture and the list of clips before you download anything.
What comes across
- Clips on their tracks, in the same stacking order, with their in and out points to the frame.
- Recordings with their sound, stitched clips (joined pieces of one recording) as the pieces they are, and clip speed changes (faster or slower) as speed changes.
- Groups as nested sequences or compound clips you can open, or laid out flat if you prefer.
- Position, scale, rotation, crop and opacity, including keyframed zooms and pans.
- Volume and volume keyframes, fades, transitions (a fade through black as a dip to colour, other Camtasia transitions as cross dissolves).
- Filled rectangles and the boxes behind callout text as colour mattes cut to size, so highlight bars, backgrounds and text boxes stay in place.
- Callouts with text as titles with their font, size, colour and position; captions with their timing; timeline and clip markers.
What doesn't
Camtasia's own effects are not part of other editors: cursor highlights and smoothing, click effects, drop shadows, device frames, behaviours, annotations drawn as shapes, arrows, blur and spotlight callouts, and quizzes. They are counted in the report so you know where to add them again.
Old Camtasia Studio projects (.camproj)
Camtasia 2020 and later no longer open .camproj projects; the way back is installing Camtasia
9, 2018 or 2019 to save them again, which a subscription does not unlock. Camtasia Studio
projects from version 3 to 8 are read here directly: the timeline with its cuts and extended
frames, title clips as a colour background with their text, zoom-n-pan as keyframed zooms,
picture-in-picture in its corner, callout texts, transitions, captions and markers.
Recordings (.trec)
Camtasia records the screen with TechSmith's own video codec. Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and
DaVinci Resolve cannot decode it, so .trec recordings stay offline in them. By default the
converted project points to an .mp4 with the same name next to each recording: turn the
recordings into MP4 with the Camtasia recording converter, put the MP4 files
next to the recordings, and the edit relinks by itself. You can also keep the .trec paths.
Media on another computer
If the recordings and media will be in a different place on the computer you edit on, enter that folder under the advanced options. Choose whether the files keep the subfolders they had or all sit in that one folder, and every clip in the converted files points there.
