    Options
    Frame timing

Camtasia stores a screen frame only when the screen changes. For editing, every frame is written at the recording's frame rate (Premiere, Final Cut and Resolve prefer this). For watching, the frames are kept as recorded: smaller files, converted faster.

    Mouse pointer

Camtasia keeps the mouse pointer apart from the screen picture, so other players never show it. Draw it in where it was, with its changes of shape, or leave it out to add pointer effects in your editor (the pointer path comes as a CSV either way).

Wide or high-resolution screens make large files. Scaling down keeps the picture sharp enough for most viewers.

Besides the MP4 with all sound mixed in, write the microphone, system sound and other tracks as separate M4A files.

Your files are deleted after processing.

    Turn Camtasia recordings into MP4

Camtasia Recorder saves .trec files (Camtasia 9 to 2026, Windows and Mac); Camtasia Studio saved .camrec (which Camtasia 2020 and later no longer open). Both keep the screen in TechSmith's own video codec, which only Camtasia can play. Players show sound with a black picture, editors list the clip as offline, and renaming the file changes nothing. Upload the recordings and get ordinary MP4 videos back.

    What you get

    • The screen as MP4: H.264 video at the recorded size, with the microphone and system sound mixed into AAC stereo.
    • The camera as a second MP4 when the recording has a camera track.
    • Each sound track on its own as M4A, if you tick the option.
    • The mouse pointer drawn into the video (or left out if you prefer), and its path and clicks as a CSV in video pixels.
    • Bookmarks set while recording in Camtasia Studio, as a CSV list.
    • A 15-second preview and a still, shown on the result page so you can check the picture before downloading.

    Choices

    • For editing (default): every frame is written at the recording's frame rate, which Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve prefer. For watching: frames are kept as Camtasia stored them (only when the screen changed), which makes smaller files and converts faster.
    • Picture size: keep the recorded size, or scale wide and 4K screens down to 1440, 1080 or 720 lines.

    Things to know

    • Camtasia keeps the mouse pointer apart from the screen picture. It is drawn back in where it was, with its changes of shape and the moments it was hidden; choose "Leave it out" to add your own effects. The pointer path and clicks also come as a CSV.
    • To move the edit you made in Camtasia as well, use the Camtasia project converter. It points the converted project at the MP4 files made here, as long as they keep their names.
    • A .trec of a few hundred bytes taken from a Git repository is a Git LFS pointer, not the recording.

    Frequently asked questions

Why won't my .trec file play?

Camtasia records the screen with TechSmith's own video codec (TSCC2) inside the .trec file. Players and editors other than Camtasia do not have that codec, so they show no picture or refuse the file. Converted to MP4 (H.264), the recording plays everywhere.

Can I just rename .trec to .mp4?

Renaming makes some players open the file, but they still cannot decode the screen video, so you get sound and a black or missing picture. The video itself has to be converted, which is what this does.

    Is the camera recording kept?

Yes. When the recording has a camera track, it comes out as a second MP4 next to the screen recording, at its own size, so you can place it in your editor.

Is the mouse pointer in the video?

Camtasia records the mouse pointer apart from the screen picture so it can be edited later, which is why other players never show it. The converter draws it back in where it was, with its changes of shape (arrow, hand, text cursor) and the moments it was hidden, at the right size on Retina screens. Choose "Leave it out" to add your own pointer effects; the pointer path and the clicks come as a CSV either way. Camtasia's click effects and highlights are not drawn.
