Open a .trec file without Camtasia
A .trec file is what Camtasia Recorder saves: the screen, the microphone and system sound, a
camera if one was on, and the cursor path. It is an MP4 container, but the screen inside uses
TechSmith's own codec, so VLC, QuickTime, Windows Media Player and video editors show no picture
or refuse it. Here it becomes a normal MP4 that opens anywhere.
What you get
- The screen recording as MP4 (H.264 video, AAC sound) at its full size, with every sound track mixed in.
- The camera as a second MP4, when the recording has one.
- Each sound track on its own (M4A) if you tick the option, for example to clean up the microphone separately.
- A short preview and a still, so you can check the result first.
Things to know
- Camtasia records the mouse pointer as separate data, which other players ignore. The converter draws it back into the MP4, with its changes of shape.
- Renaming
.trecto.mp4does not help: the screen video still needs TechSmith's codec. - If the
.treccame from a Git repository and is only a few hundred bytes, it is a Git LFS pointer, not the recording: download it again from the repository's LFS storage.
