Take the sound out of a video: a talk, a song from a concert recording, the soundtrack of a clip. Save it as MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG or Opus. Audio files can be converted too, for example FLAC to MP3 or WAV to M4A.
How it works
- Upload a video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV, FLV, 3GP, MPEG, VOB, TS/MTS, OGV and more) or an audio file (MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WMA, AIFF).
- Choose the format and, for MP3, M4A, OGG and Opus, the bitrate.
- Download the audio file. A waveform picture shows what was extracted.
Unchanged when possible
Most MP4 and MOV videos carry AAC sound; WebM videos Opus or Vorbis; AVI and FLV files often MP3. With Keep the original sound unchanged on (the default), sound that already is in the chosen format is copied into the new file exactly as it is: no quality loss, and it takes only seconds. For example, the sound of an MP4 goes into an M4A untouched. Otherwise it is encoded at the bitrate you choose.
Choosing a format
- MP3: plays on everything; 192 kbps is a good default for music.
- M4A (AAC): better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate, and usually the original sound of an MP4.
- WAV: uncompressed, for audio editors and transcription software; 24-bit sources stay 24-bit.
- FLAC: lossless and about half the size of WAV.
- OGG (Vorbis) and Opus: open formats; Opus sounds good at low bitrates, especially for speech.
Saving already compressed sound (such as AAC or MP3) as WAV or FLAC keeps it exactly as decoded, but it can't bring back detail the original compression removed.
Details
- The main sound track is used (the one players choose by default); the result says when a file has more than one.
- Stereo and surround are kept, except in MP3, which is stereo at most.
- Title, artist, album and similar tags are kept; the file's location and date tags are not.
- Uploads can be up to 2 GB and 4 hours.
