Open a newer Premiere Pro project in an older Premiere Pro
Premiere Pro refuses projects saved by a newer version: "This project was saved in a newer version of Premiere Pro and cannot be opened." It happens when a colleague, a client or a school lab runs a newer Premiere than you, or when one computer updated and the other didn't. Premiere Pro has no "Save as older version".
How it works
Every project carries the number of the Premiere Pro version that saved it, and Premiere checks that number first. The rest of the project changes little from one version to the next. This tool writes a copy marked for the version you pick, from CC 2017 to 2025. Everything else stays as it was written, with one exception: Premiere Pro 2026 leaves out two settings of every video effect parameter (its lower and upper limit) that 2025 and older versions require, so those are put back, with values that make the older version take each effect's own limits again.
What to expect
- Sequences, clips, bins, effects, keyframes, markers and media links come across.
- Features the older version doesn't have can be reset or dropped when it opens the copy, such as newer effects or color management settings. Premiere Pro tells you if it skips something.
- The original project is not changed: you get a new file named for the version.
Steps
- Upload the
.prproj. - Under "Save it for", pick the Premiere Pro version you have.
- Download the copy and open it with File > Open Project.
The report says which version saved the project, so you know how big the step back is.
