Photoshop refuses a whole file for one damaged part: "Could not complete your request because of an unexpected end-of-file", "...because it is not a valid Photoshop document", or a program error. A PSD is written front to back: settings, then the layers with their pixels, then a combined picture of everything at the end. A save or copy that stops early loses the end first, so often every layer is still there. This page writes a repaired copy that Photoshop opens.
What the repair does
- Layers that survived are copied as they are, byte for byte: text layers, smart objects, layer effects, adjustment layers, masks and folders stay editable.
- A layer cut off part-way keeps the rows of pixels that survived; the rest is transparent.
- Layers whose pixels were lost entirely stay in the file, empty, with their name, position and settings.
- The combined picture at the end is rebuilt from the layers when it is missing or cut off.
- Document data that was damaged (for example the contents of embedded smart objects stored after the layers) is left out, and the result page says what that means for the file.
PSB files, 16- and 32-bit documents and greyscale, CMYK and Lab documents are repaired in their
own format and colour mode. Photoshop's own recovery files (.psb in the AutoRecover folder)
can be rescued the same way.
How to use it
- Upload the
.psdor.psbthat won't open. - Check the picture, what happened to the file and the list of layers on the result page.
- Download the repaired file and open it in Photoshop.
