Open an .MSWMM file without Movie Maker
An .MSWMM file is a project of the Windows Movie Maker that came with Windows XP and Windows
Vista. It is the plan of a movie, not the movie: it names the pictures, videos and music on the
computer it was made on, how long each one plays, the transitions and effects, and the titles
and credits. That Movie Maker has not been available for years, and the newer Movie Maker and
the Photos app cannot open these projects.
Upload the .MSWMM file here together with the pictures, videos and music it uses, and get the
movie as an MP4 that plays on any computer, phone or TV, or uploads to YouTube.
What comes across
- The storyboard and timeline as you left them: every clip cut where you cut it, sped up or slowed down, pictures shown for their time, the transitions between them.
- Video effects such as fade in and out (from black or white), grayscale, sepia, film age, brightness, rotate, ease in and ease out.
- Titles and credits with their font, colour, size and place, fading in and out; credits roll.
- Music and sound effects at their place and volume, with their fades.
Lost the pictures?
An .MSWMM project keeps a small picture (153 x 115) of every clip. Upload the project on its
own and the movie is made from those: soft and without the sound of the videos, but with every
picture, title and transition in its place. When you upload some of the files, the others are
shown from their small picture.
Finding the files
The project remembers the folders the files were in (the media list in the results shows each one). Upload the project on its own first to see the list, then upload it again with the files. They can come from any folder: they are matched by name. Files that are gone for good are shown from their small picture (or as a card naming them, if you choose), so everything else stays in time.
Other editors
The same upload also gives the edit as Premiere Pro XML, Final Cut Pro XML, EDLs and OpenTimelineIO, and the titles as SRT captions.
