Removing the sound from a video is useful before sharing a clip with background talk, traffic or wind noise, or before adding music of your own. Every sound track is removed, and the picture is copied exactly as it is: nothing is re-encoded, so there is no quality loss and it takes seconds.
How to remove the sound
- Upload the video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG, TS and more; up to 2 GB).
- Effect: Remove the sound is already chosen.
- Start, and download the silent video.
What you get
- The same video, without sound: the picture is copied bit for bit, at the same size, frame rate and quality. The file gets smaller by the size of the sound.
- The same format: an MP4 stays MP4, a MOV stays MOV, a WMV stays WMV. MXF becomes MKV, and two rare formats are re-encoded as MP4: RealMedia, and DV, which stores the sound inside every video frame.
- Subtitles and chapters are kept in MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM.
- Upright phone videos keep their rotation, so they still play the right way up.
- Tags such as the recording date and location are not copied.
Long videos
Because nothing is re-encoded, long videos are quick: uploads can be up to 3 hours long and 2 GB.
Tips
- To keep the sound as a separate file, save it first with Extract Audio from Video.
- Reversing, changing the speed and making a boomerang can leave out the sound in the same step, so there is no need to remove it first.
