Profile pictures, product grids and many social media posts want square images, but most photos are 3:2 or 4:3. This page crops each photo to an exact square and resizes it in the same step, for a single picture or a whole batch. It is preset to 1080 × 1080 pixels; type any other size into the width and height fields.
How to crop images to a square
- Upload the photos (or a
.zipof a folder). - The Resize mode is already Fill and crop to exactly width × height. The photo is scaled until it covers the square, and whatever sticks out is cut off.
- Choose the Position, which decides the part that survives. For tall portrait shots, Top keeps heads that Centre would cut. For wide landscape shots, Left or Right choose the side. Top and bottom make no difference on a wide photo, because only its sides are trimmed.
- Download the squares. Each file keeps its name and format unless you choose another under Save as.
Smaller photos and exact sizes
Never enlarge smaller images is ticked by default. A photo smaller than the square you asked for is still cropped square, just at its own scale: a 400 × 600 picture becomes 400 × 400, and the result lists it as kept at its size. Untick the box if every file must be exactly 1080 × 1080; the enlarged ones will look softer.
The same mode makes other exact shapes too: enter 1200 × 800 for 3:2 or 1080 × 1350 for a 4:5 portrait.
Square without cutting anything off
If nothing may be cropped, for example a product photo or a logo, switch Resize mode to
Fit and pad to exactly width × height. The whole image is kept and the leftover space is filled
with the background colour under More options: white by default, any hex colour, or
transparent when you save as PNG or WebP. JPEG can't be transparent, so there the padding is
white.
