A square video (1:1) fills the same space in a feed whether the phone is held upright or not, and suits profile videos, product clips and grids. Cropping a landscape or upright video to a square keeps the middle of the picture, or the square you place yourself.
How to crop a video to a square
- Upload the video (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and more; up to 2 GB).
- Shape: Square (1:1) is already chosen. Without anything else, the largest square in the middle of the picture is kept: for a 1920 × 1080 video, 1080 × 1080.
- To keep another part, draw an area on the video: the square is taken from the middle of it. Draw it off-centre to follow the subject.
- Start, and download the square video.
What you get
- Size: the square is as large as the picture allows, in the video's own pixels, rounded to even numbers. Nothing is stretched or enlarged.
- Upright phone videos are turned upright before cropping, so the square is taken from the picture as you see it.
- Sound: every sound track is kept, unchanged where the format allows.
- Format: MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM stay in their format; others become MP4.
Tips
- A square from a 16:9 video loses a lot of width: people at the edges are cut off. Drawing the area over the subject gives a better square than the middle.
- To add bars around a video instead of cutting it, crop is the wrong tool: this cropper only removes picture.
- Long videos are re-encoded as a whole, which can take a while: up to about 25 minutes of 1080p per job. Trim the part you need first.
