Some chat apps cap uploads at 8 MB. That is little for video: a single minute of 1080p from a phone can be ten times more. Compressing to an 8 MB target fits the video under the cap with the best picture possible for its length.
How to compress a video to 8 MB
- Upload the video (up to 2 GB).
- Compress to: A file size with 8 MB is already set.
- Start and download the MP4.
One MB is counted as 1,000,000 bytes, with a small margin kept for the file structure, so the result stays under 8 MB.
What to expect
8 MB is about 64 megabits for the whole video, sound included:
- Short clips (10 to 20 seconds) stay sharp, often at 1080p or 720p.
- Around a minute usually becomes 480p to 540p at up to 30 fps.
- Several minutes become small; below a watchable minimum, the result tells you the smallest size that makes sense and suggests trimming.
The resolution and frame rate are lowered only as far as needed, and the result tells you what changed.
Getting the most out of 8 MB
- Trim the video to the moment you want to share. It is the most effective step.
- Remove the sound if it isn't needed, or choose 64 kbps for speech.
- H.265 gives a noticeably better picture at the same size on devices that play it; H.264 is the choice that plays everywhere.
- Screen recordings with little movement compress very well and stay sharp longer than camera footage.
