Velox or Berkeley .emd, .dm3/.dm4, TIA .emi with its .ser files, SEM/TEM .tif (with the .txt or .hdr file Hitachi, JEOL and TESCAN save next to it), Bruker .bcf/.spx, AZtec .h5oina, EDAX .spd with .spc/.ipr, JEOL .asw/.img/.map/.pts/.eds, .mrc, .mib, Phenom .elid or .msa. Several files or a .zip of a folder are converted together.

    Options
    Picture format

PNG keeps every grey level; JPEG files are smaller.

Where the scale bar is drawn. Its length is a round number (200 nm, 2 µm, 5 1/nm for diffraction) chosen from the pixel size in the file.

Automatic picks white or black from the brightness behind the bar.

    Scale bar size

Removes the strip with the instrument settings at the bottom of SEM pictures (Thermo Fisher/FEI, TESCAN, Zeiss, Hitachi, JEOL) before the scale bar is added. The calibrated TIFF is cut the same way.

Automatic stretches the grey levels between the 0.5 % darkest and brightest pixels (8-bit pictures stay as recorded; diffraction patterns use a log scale). The TIFF always keeps the original values.

For drift-corrected frames, image series and STEM scans with several frames. The TIFF always holds every frame.

For EDS spectrum images: element symbols separated by commas, for example Fe, Ni, O. A line can be named (Au M, Cu L). Leave empty to use the elements stored in the file.

    More options

Averages neighbouring pixels in the element map pictures so sparse X-ray counts read as areas. The TIFF and CSV files keep the unsmoothed counts.

A fixed length such as 500 nm, 2 µm or 5 1/nm. Leave empty for an automatic round length.

For pictures without a calibration, for example 2.5 nm or 0.31 µm per pixel.

ImageJ-compatible keeps 8-bit and 16-bit data as they are and stores everything else as 32-bit float.

Also save the whole spectrum image (every pixel's spectrum, as y, x, energy) as a Berkeley EMD (HDF5) file for ncempy, HyperSpy or your own scripts, when it is under 1.5 GB.

Your files are deleted after processing.

Thermo Fisher Velox saves every STEM and TEM acquisition as an .emd file: an HDF5 container with one dataset per detector, the camera frames, EDS spectra and, for spectrum images, the raw stream of X-ray events. Without Velox, the pictures, their calibration and the spectra are hard to get at. This page turns the file into ordinary TIFF, PNG and CSV files.

How to convert EMD to TIFF

    1. Upload one or more .emd files, or a .zip of a whole session.
    2. Choose PNG or JPEG for the pictures, the corner and colour of the scale bar, and whether frame series become one averaged picture, the first frame or a picture per frame.
    3. Download a TIFF and a picture for every detector (HAADF, DF, BF, DPC, camera), named after the file and the detector.

    What is kept

    • Calibration. Each TIFF carries the pixel size and unit in the form ImageJ and Fiji read, so Analyze, Set Scale shows nanometres straight away. Diffraction patterns are calibrated in 1/nm.
    • Values. 8 and 16-bit data stay as recorded; other types are saved as 32-bit float. Drift-corrected frames and image series become one multi-page TIFF.
    • Complex images. FFTs are shown as their log magnitude and DPC vector images as a colour wheel picture.
    • EDS. Spectra are written as CSV with one column per detector and their sum. For spectrum images you also get the sum spectrum, a total-counts map, a map for each element selected in Velox (or the ones you type), a colour overlay and the maps Velox itself saved.
    • Settings. Accelerating voltage, magnification, detector, dwell time, camera length, stage position and every other stored entry, as text and JSON.

    Things to watch

    • Velox can save spectrum images as "reduced data", without the X-ray event stream. Their pictures, stored maps and spectra are converted, but per-pixel spectra cannot be rebuilt.
    • The picture uses an automatic contrast stretch; the TIFF always holds the original numbers, so measure intensities on the TIFF, not on the PNG.
    • Test files span Velox format versions 4 to 13, from single images to EDS and EELS spectrum images.
