Open NETZSCH .ngb files without Proteus
NETZSCH instruments save their measurements as .ngb-… files that only Proteus opens, and the
Proteus licence usually lives on the instrument PC. This converter reads the files directly and
gives you every recorded channel as a CSV and an Excel workbook with charts, together with the
sample details, the temperature program and the calibration stored in the file.
What to upload
| Instrument | Files | What is read |
|---|---|---|
| STA and TGA (STA 449 F3 Jupiter, STA 449 C) | .ngb-ss3 (sample), .ngb-bs3 (correction), .ngb-ds3 and .ngb-dsu (Sample + Correction) | time, sample temperature, TG mass change, DSC signal, purge and protective gas flows, furnace and housekeeping channels |
| DSC (DSC 204 F1 Phoenix) | .ngb-sd7, both the older single-file layout (Proteus 5) and the current ZIP-based one | time, sample temperature, DSC signal, gas flows, furnace channels |
| Push-rod dilatometer (DIL 402 Expedis) | .ngb-dla (Sample + Correction), .ngb-cla (correction) | time, sample temperature, length change, push-rod force and its setpoint |
Files written by Proteus 5.2, 6.0 and 8.0 were checked. Other .ngb-… measurement files are read
when they use the same container. Upload several files, or a .zip of a folder, to convert them
together.
What you get
- CSV with one row per data point and one column per channel, units in the header, a segment number on every row, and the decimal comma version if your Excel needs it.
- Values as Proteus shows them: mass in % of the sample mass, DTG in %/min, DSC in mW/mg computed with the DSC sensitivity calibration stored in the file (the sensitivity column is included), and dL/L0 in % for dilatometer runs. The signals as stored (µV, mg, µm) stay in the table too.
- One CSV per segment, so a heat, cool, heat DSC run gives you the second heating on its own.
- Excel workbook with the data and ready-made charts (mass, DTG, DSC or dL/L0 against temperature, one series per heating or cooling), a segments sheet, the temperature program with gas flows, and a metadata sheet: instrument, software version, sample name and mass, crucible, furnace, carrier, gases, operator, laboratory, project, comment and measurement date.
Sample + Correction measurements
.ngb-ds3, .ngb-dsu and .ngb-dla files contain the correction run they were measured with.
The converter subtracts it the way Proteus does, segment by segment on the time axis, and for a
dilatometer adds back the expansion of the reference material over the sample length. Corrected
and uncorrected columns are both written. A separate correction file (.ngb-bs3, .ngb-cla) can
be added under "More inputs" to correct plain sample files.
How accurate is it?
Results were compared with Proteus exports of the same measurements and with the open-source pyngb reader. DSC in mW/mg agrees with a Proteus text export within 0.00002 mW/mg, the sensitivity curve within 0.000006 µV/mW, and the corrected mass of a Sample + Correction TGA run within 0.003 %. All channels of the 20 test files that pyngb also reads came out identical, and corrected dilatometer dL/L0 equals pyngb's, which its author checked against Proteus exports. Proteus exports show the temperature slightly smoothed; the CSV keeps the temperature stored in the file. DTG is computed here (a straight-line fit over ±0.5 min), so it follows Proteus closely but not to the last digit.

Not supported yet
Proteus analysis files (.ngb-taa, .ngb-od7) store an evaluation, not the measurement, and are
refused with a hint to upload the measurement file. Calibration files and files from other vendors
(TA Instruments, Mettler Toledo, PerkinElmer) are not read. Proteus evaluations such as peak areas
or onsets are not part of the measurement file and are not exported.
