Silhouette Studio designs, in any cutting program
A design came as a .studio3 file, but you cut with a Cricut, a laser or a Brother ScanNCut, or
you want to edit it in Inkscape. Only Silhouette Studio opens .studio3 files, and its Basic
Edition cannot save anything else: SVG export is part of the Business Edition.
This converter reads the Silhouette Studio file itself and writes the design out again as SVG and DXF, at the size it has in Silhouette Studio.

The result page shows the preview, the page size, the Silhouette Studio version that saved the file, and a table of the layers and objects with their cut setting, line and fill colours and size.
What is converted
- True size. Everything is in millimetres, so shapes import at their real size.
- Layers become Inkscape layers in the SVG and layers in the DXF; groups stay groups, and objects keep their order.
- Cut settings. Each shape keeps whether it is cut or set to "No cut" (print only). Choose Cut lines only to get just the shapes that are cut, without fills or pictures.
- Colours: line colours, line widths, fill colours and gradients (colours and direction).
- Text arrives as letter outlines. Silhouette Studio stores the outline of every letter, so the text looks right without the font installed.
- Pictures of Print & Cut designs and picture fills are embedded in the SVG, in place.
- Registration marks of Print & Cut pages can be drawn on their own layer (More options).
Supported files
.studio files and .studio3 files saved by Silhouette Studio 3.0 up to 5.0 have been tested,
including files saved in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Japanese versions of the
program. Several files at once and ZIP archives work too.
Using the converted files
- Cricut Design Space: Upload → Upload Image, choose the SVG, and check the size before you cut.
- Inkscape: open the SVG; each Silhouette layer is an Inkscape layer. Other vector editors open it with the layers as groups.
- LightBurn, xTool Creative Space and other laser software: import the SVG or the DXF. Pick Smooth splines under More options if your CAD program should keep curves exact.
- Brother CanvasWorkspace: import the SVG, ideally with Cut lines only.
Limitations
- Gradients keep their colours and direction but are spread over each shape's outline box, so they can sit slightly differently than in Silhouette Studio.
- Shadows, sketch and rhinestone effects and Silhouette's print bleed are not converted.
- The DXF holds outlines only: DXF has no fills or pictures.
- Silhouette's own cut settings (blade, force, speed) are machine settings and are not exported.
- Files that are encrypted or protected cannot be converted, and nothing is unlocked.
Anything in a file that could not be read is listed as a warning next to the result, never left out without telling you.
Design licences
Converting a file does not change its licence. The designer's or shop's terms still decide what you may make and sell with it, and designs bought in the Silhouette Design Store stay under the store's terms.
Privacy
Your file is only used for the conversion. The upload is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes, and the converted files are deleted automatically after 30 minutes, or immediately when you click "Delete now". The file is never sent to Silhouette America, Cricut or anyone else.
