Files from FileMaker Pro 3 to 6 do not record their character set. Automatic tells Mac and Windows files apart; pick another one if accented letters look wrong. Files from FileMaker 7 and later are always read correctly.

Your files are deleted after processing.

An .fp5 file is a database from FileMaker Pro 5, 5.5 or 6. Current FileMaker versions do not open it: Claris only offers a conversion through FileMaker Pro 7 to 11, which do not run on recent Macs, and the FileMaker trial cannot read .fp5 either. This page reads the file directly and shows you what is inside, without any FileMaker.

How to open an .fp5 file

    1. Upload the .fp5 file. If your solution has several files (in FileMaker 5 and 6 every table is a separate file), upload them all at once or as a .zip of the folder.
    2. Check the preview: the table with its number of records and fields, and its first records.
    3. Download the Excel workbook, the CSV files, the SQLite database or the JSON file.

Each .fp5 file becomes one table named after the file. Field names, the order of the fields and every stored value are kept. Number fields with plain numbers become real numbers in Excel; dates stay in the form FileMaker stored them, for example 12/12/1999.

Things to know about .fp5 files

    • Accented letters. FileMaker 5 and 6 saved text in the character set of the Mac or PC it ran on, without noting which. The tool works this out from the text and tells you when it had little to go on. If accents come out as odd symbols (such as "MŸller" for "Müller"), convert again with another "Text encoding" setting.
    • Repeating fields get one column per repetition, so nothing is squeezed into one cell.
    • Calculations and summaries that FileMaker did not store are listed but left out, because FileMaker computes them on screen. Stored calculation results are included.
    • Pictures and sounds in container fields come out in a ZIP: as GIF or JPEG when FileMaker kept one, otherwise as PNG (old Mac PICT pictures) or WAV (Mac sounds).
    • Mac files without an extension (common in the FileMaker 5 era) are recognised by their content when you upload them inside a .zip.

The upload is deleted as soon as the conversion finishes and the results are deleted after 30 minutes.
