Apple Numbers saves spreadsheets as .numbers files, which Excel on Windows can't open. Converting
turns them into an Excel workbook (XLSX) with your tables and formulas, so you can keep working
on any computer.
How to convert Numbers to Excel
- Add the
.numbersfile above (or several, or a ZIP of folders). - Keep Convert to: Word, Excel or PowerPoint: spreadsheets become XLSX.
- Press Convert and download the workbook.
Numbers files from Numbers '09 and from Numbers 2013 and later are read.
How Numbers becomes Excel
A Numbers sheet can hold several tables side by side; Excel has one grid per sheet. So every table becomes a sheet of its own, named after the Numbers sheet and table ("Budget_Table 1"). Cell values, text, dates and number formats come across, and formulas are kept as formulas where Excel has the same function.
Charts, pictures and shapes placed on the sheets may not come across into the workbook; convert to PDF as well to keep a picture of how the sheets looked.
Other choices
- PDF: every table on a page, fitted to the page width.
- CSV: one plain table per sheet, for databases, scripts or another spreadsheet program.
- ODS: for LibreOffice Calc.
Tip
Fonts from the Mac (Helvetica Neue, Cochin…) are replaced with similar ones; in a workbook that only changes the look, not the data.
