The .mny file (Money 98 to Money Plus Sunset), or an .mbf backup made by Money.

    Options

Leave empty unless Money asks for a password when it opens this file. It is only used to open the file.

    More options

QIF dates have no fixed order: Quicken reads them the way your computer writes dates. Automatic picks month/day/year for US editions of Money and day/month/year for the others.

Quicken for Windows reads Windows Western text. Automatic uses it when every name fits and UTF-8 otherwise (for example for Japanese or Greek names).

Your files are deleted after processing.

GnuCash is a common new home for Microsoft Money users: it is open source, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and keeps double-entry books much like Money's accounts. It cannot read a .mny file, but it imports QIF, and this page turns your Money file into QIF without Money.

How to move from Money to GnuCash

    1. Upload your .mny file (with its password if it has one) and convert.
    2. Download QIF, all accounts in one file.
    3. In GnuCash, choose File > Import > Import QIF and add the file. The importer reads the account list, the categories and the securities in it.
    4. Match the accounts and categories GnuCash proposes (Money's categories become income and expense accounts, "Bills : Electricity" becoming Expenses:Bills:Electricity), then finish.
    5. Compare the balances with the Accounts sheet of the Excel workbook.

Importing every account from the one file lets GnuCash pair the two sides of each transfer instead of entering them twice.

    What comes across

    • Every account with its opening balance and transactions: date, number, payee, memo, category and cleared or reconciled status.
    • Split transactions as multi-split transactions, and transfers between accounts.
    • Investment accounts with their trades (quantity, price, commission), dividends and interest, and the securities with their symbols. Money keeps investment cash in a separate "(Cash)" account; it arrives as its own account, linked to the trades by transfers.
    • Loans, assets and credit cards as liability and asset accounts.

    Things to know

    • Dates: GnuCash asks when QIF dates could be read two ways; US editions of Money write month/day/year, others day/month/year (changeable under "Date order in QIF files").
    • Currencies: QIF files carry no currency, so GnuCash asks which one the file is in. If you had accounts in another currency, set their currency in GnuCash after the import; the amounts are in each account's own currency.
    • Not included: budgets, scheduled transactions, reports and price history beyond the last price.

Your file is used only to produce your downloads, and the results are deleted after 30 minutes.
