Make an animated WebP from pictures
An animated WebP does what a GIF does, with two big differences: every frame has full colour instead of 256 colours, and the file is usually much smaller. All current browsers play it, and many chat and messaging apps accept animated WebP stickers.
- Upload the frames (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF…) or a ZIP of a folder of frames.
- Choose the time per picture, the order and the size.
- Keep Animated WebP selected and set the quality: 80 is a good balance; 100 is lossless.
- Click Make GIF to create the animated WebP.
What you get
- Full colour with no dithering, so photos and gradients look like the originals.
- Smooth transparency: PNG frames with transparent or half-transparent areas stay that way, which makes WebP a good format for stickers and overlays. Choose a transparent border colour if your pictures have different shapes.
- Small files: the encoder (libwebp) stores only what changes from frame to frame and picks lossy or lossless compression for each frame, whichever is smaller.
- Timing and loops exactly as you set them; animated pictures you add keep their own timing.
Things to know
- Some older programs and a few websites still only accept GIF. If you need both, make the WebP here and a GIF from the same pictures.
- WebP can't be larger than 16,383 pixels on a side; animations are limited to 800 px by default anyway.
- To edit an animation afterwards (reverse, speed, loops, rotate), use the GIF Editor, which also works with animated WebP.
